SuperBetter has a new owner!


SuperBetter is a very good thing in the world that has helped over 400,000 people so far tackle real-life challenges like stress, depression, anxiety, chronic pain and traumatic brain injury.

Unfortunately, the San Francisco company that built the original app & website ran out of money and closed its doors about 2 years ago. As a result, the product and our amazing SuperBetter community have not received the attention that both deserve.

Today, we are happy to announce that SuperBetter has a new owner!

SuperBetter has been acquired by SuperBetter, LLC, a new company in Chicago that is reimagining how we care for mental health and wellbeing in America and around the world.

We are super excited to work with Jane McGonigal to realize the potential of SuperBetter to help people around the world be stronger for life.  Jane is our Chief Science Officer.

The purpose of today’s post is to simply say hello and let you know that we are starting to “turn the lights back on” at SuperBetter.

We’ve begun to make improvements, and will make many more in the coming months. The SuperBetter Forum is now fixed. We are thrilled to see new members already adding their voice to the discussions. A few wonderful SuperBetter fans have even volunteered to moderate the forums while we are building out our new team!

Our goal is to create an amazing product experience. As you can imagine, after 2 years the product we inherited has bugs and is in need of updates! In fact, we found the Android app to be in such bad shape that we pulled it from the Google Play Store for now. We’ll bring it back after it is fixed.

  1. does this mean when I bought the app three or four weeks ago, the “doors” were knowingly closed and this is why i have yet to be able to access the program even though it has been paid for?

    • Hi Jeff,

      The company slowed down significantly 2 years ago and forward progress slowed as well. The app has been available for free on the web and for a fee in the app store up until this summer. We’re dusting things off and getting it all moving again so we can take SuperBetter to a wider audience and help more people!

  2. Wow! This is great news, thank you guys for picking up the pieces and continuing to run SuperBetter! I just started playing 2 weeks ago in an effort to help with depression, and I can’t tell you how much this game has already helped me. Just having small goals (quests) to reach for every day makes life easier. Looking forward to seeing what you guys end up doing with the game, and I’m excited for an Android app! Thank you!

  4. I found SuperBetter via Jane’s TED talk 3 years ago and only just got round to trying it out after hearing her on the Tim Ferris podcast. I love the ideas but can see it needs work, so this sounds like great news! Would love to see this really take off and I hope the Android app is available soon. I see messaging on the forum has been broken for several weeks. Just thought I’d mention that I’m a freelance PHP web developer, maybe I can help out somehow?

  5. I would like to personally say thank you for running with this concept, Superbetter has provided me a whole new model for dealing with life issues, my family and co- workers thank you also.

    I look forward to your success with this concept. I do believe that a monitized version of super better with greater emphasis on customer support and some sort of a loyalty program to encourage more users might help in the long run to improve the experience of Super better.

  6. Congratulations to everyone. I’ve been using this great app, it helps me to enjoy getting super better in so many ways, that right now I’m moving forward new challenges in my life. It actually helped me during my depression-burn out crisis last year and now -with help of many allies: therapist, priests and friends- now I really have grown more resillient and confident towards myself.   7. This is really exciting. The idea behind SuperBetter is brilliant. I’ve really struggled to use the site and app however, so I’d love to see improvements to UX be a priority.

    Where can I find more about the new owners / board and their beliefs, mission & dreams for SuperBetter? I can see there being massive support for this, if people trust that the gaming side will really get developed.

    Pictures and points aren’t enough. I’d love to hear good news for SuperBetter, and all of us.

    This is awesome news!! I just read the chapter where Jane talks about companies like Zappos using SuperBetter and therapists using it with their clients. This is great!

    I want to incorporate SuperBetter into my coaching program, where I design the Power Ups, Bad Guys and Quests…Is there any way for me to create them where my clients could use them without typing them out in the SuperBetter app?

    • Thank you Amy. Sharing adventures is a big idea – whether it be for coaches, therapists, professors, friends or allies. It’s a feature we would love to add. We just announced our IndieGoGo campaign that will help us add these types of features in SuperBetter 2.0.

My daughter has used this app to help her during her experience with post-concussive syndrome, which is due to a brain injury she sustained at age 11 and has affected her for more than 18 months. We are really glad to see that the app is moving forward again with improvements, but with mixed feelings as we won’t be able to afford a subscription with our other mounting treatment/medical costs. We hope the free version will have significant support even if it doesn’t include all the premium features, including some goals that are relevant for a pediatric population and not just adults. Thanks.

  10. I have enjoyed playing Superbetter and received the hardcover book as a birthday present. How do I get the extra in game items? And, is there about to be a per month charge?
